Book Review And Recommendation – The Phoenix Project
The Phoenix Project has become the shining start when it comes to IT DevOps. Released in 2013, The Phoenix Project helped usher in the wave of DevOps and Agile methodology in IT departments all over the world. If you an IT professional chances are you have heard of this book or been through some kind of Agile training that has mentioned it. If you haven’t read this book I would highly recommend you do.
This book is told through the eyes of Bill and IT Manager at a company called Parts Unlimited. Here’s the official synopsis:
Bill is an IT manager at Parts Unlimited. It’s Tuesday morning and on his drive into the office, Bill gets a call from the CEO.
The company’s new IT initiative, code named Phoenix Project, is critical to the future of Parts Unlimited, but the project is massively over budget and very late. The CEO wants Bill to report directly to him and fix the mess in ninety days or else Bill’s entire department will be outsourced.
With the help of a prospective board member and his mysterious philosophy of The Three Ways, Bill starts to see that IT work has more in common with manufacturing plant work than he ever imagined. With the clock ticking, Bill must organize work flow streamline interdepartmental communications and effectively serve the other business functions at Parts Unlimited.

Even though the book is told through a story this is not a traditional non-fiction novel. This is written by IT operations professionals and reads more like an IT manual, wrapped in a story to help bring understandably context to a complicated technical methodology.
